National policy exists regarding the administering of the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination to children at birth. Manchester, which has a high incidence of TB, is required to give the BCG vaccination universally to all Manchester newborns, while the other nine boroughs that make up Greater Manchester, and which see lower rates of TB are required only to vaccinate children who are in ‘at-risk groups’, typically because they have had close contact with a case of TB and are at-risk for that reason.
A review into the policy and practice of giving the BCG vaccination to newborns within Greater Manchester is being actioned through a joint review of local arrangement, and the intention is to ensure that all relevant health services are following the national guidance surrounding BCG vaccination at birth.
